What is a Philodendron Birkin?

The philodendron plant has been around for hundreds of years, but the Birkin variety is actually a hybrid and does not grow in the wild. If cared for properly, these plants can get up to 3 feet tall indoors. 

Birkin plants are quickly becoming the new “it” plant. They are a great plant for an office or as a gift for a first-time plant owner. Or, if you’re like me, you just want to hoard these plants for yourself!

How To Care For A Philodendron Birkin Plant

Sunlight & Placement

These plants do not like direct sunlight or no sunlight, but pretty much anything in between is fair game. Just remember that the pinstripes perform best when your Philodendron Birkin is getting medium to bright indirect sunlight. 

Soil

Philodendron Birkin plants do not require any type of special soil. Any well-draining potting soil will do.

Water & Humidity

The Philodendron Birkin is just as hardy as the rest of the philodendron species. Meaning, you really only need to water this plant every 1-2 weeks. Make sure to let the soil dry out between watering, but be sure to avoid the ring of death! (When the soil starts to separate from the edge of the pot due to lack of watering.)

Take it from me though, I’ve neglected my Birkins a time or two and they are still thriving. 

This variety is a tropical plant so it does love humidity. But don’t worry if your home isn’t very humid. Mine are doing just fine! But there are always ways to add humidity to your plant.

Temperature

The average temperature of your home is just fine for your Philodendron Birkin. Just make sure to not place your plant outside during cold months when freezing temps are likely, and avoid placing your plant close to air vents. 

Fertilizer

Can we be honest about fertilizer for a second? I’ve never fertilized my houseplants. (With the exception of my lemon tree!) So personally, and I’m no expert on plants, I don’t think it is necessary. But if you do, keep reading. 

Philodendron Birkins can be fertilized once per month during their growing season which is spring & summer. Any houseplant fertilizer is fine. 

Philodendron tortum Plant Features

Philodendron tortum, sometimes called Fernleaf Philodendron, is a beautiful and distinctive climbing houseplant that features finely divided foliage and an easy-care nature. It's not terribly fussy about growing conditions, so you can enjoy it as it thrives in your home or office. 

Before it matures enough to climb, it starts out with a bushy look that's perfect for display on a bright desk or tabletop. As it ages, its stem elongates into a vine. If you grow it up against a totem, moss pole, or other structure, it will root right into the structure to help it climb. (Note: This includes walls. If you let your Philodendron tortum climb a wall in your home, it could tear the paint off if you ever remove the plant.) 

Like many Philodendron varieties, the leaves become much larger if you allow it to climb and have warm, bright conditions. Mature leaves can get more than 12 inches long! 

Native to tropical rainforests across Brazil and Bolivia in South America, this climbing houseplant adapts well to average home conditions. 

Philodendron tortum Growing Instructions

Philodendron tortum Light Needs 

Give your Philodendron tortum medium to bright indirect light indoors to keep it happiest. If it doesn't get enough light, this climbing houseplant will get long and sparse, needing regular pruning to stay full and lush. 
Placing it within about 3 to 4 feet of a good-sized unobstructed east- or west-facing window is ideal in most homes. This is enough light that it casts a strong shadow throughout much of the day. Don't have a spot with good natural light? No worries: You can grow Philodendron tortum under plant lights or a mix of natural and artificial light. 
Tip: If you live in the South and there's a lot of direct afternoon sun coming through the window, it can potentially cause sunburn if your Philodendron tortum is within a foot or so of the window. In Northern areas, direct sun through the window is less of a problem because the sun isn't as strong.

Philodendron tortum Water Needs 

Like most of the other aroids in our Trending Tropicals collection, this climbing houseplant is sensitive to overwatering. It's best to allow the top few inches of the potting mix dry in between waterings. 
If you're in doubt about whether it needs water, it's usually best to wait. This plant would rather stay too dry than too wet.

Philodendron tortum Humidity Needs

Your Philodendron tortum prefers above-average relative humidity, but typically does well in average conditions, especially if it's watered adequately. If your home's air is particularly dry, it's helpful for the plant to boost the ambient moisture. You can do this by clustering your Philodendron with your other houseplants. A second option is to put a small humidifier nearby. 
If you grow it on a moss pole, keeping the moss moist can also help provide a small humidity boost. 

Philodendron tortum Fertilizing Needs

Fertilize this climbing aroid in spring and summer when it is actively growing. Use a fertilizer product formulated for use on houseplants (either synthetic or organic is fine for this plant). Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging. Never apply more fertilizer than the instructions recommend, as doing so could damage the Philodendron's roots.

Pruning Philodendron tortum

Pruning typically isn't necessary for this beautiful climbing vine. You can pinch back the new growth to encourage it to branch , rather than focusing its growth from one main stem. 
Tip: If you pinch off the new growth, you can use it to propagate new vines. You can grow new Philodendron tortum from the cuttings. 

Note: This Philodendron may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.

To care for a Pink Princess Philodendron, provide bright, indirect light, maintain consistently moist soil by watering when the top inch dries out, ensure good drainage to avoid overwatering, and keep humidity high by misting regularly or using a humidifier; ideal temperatures range between 65-80°F, and fertilize lightly during the growing season (spring/summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer; prune as needed to maintain shape and encourage fuller growth.

Piper crocatum, also known as Celebes Pepper, is a tropical plant that requires bright, indirect light, well-draining soil, and moderate watering. It's a vining plant that can be grown in a terrarium, hanging basket, or on a moss pole.

Pitcher plants require bright light, moist soil, and warm temperatures to thrive. They can be grown indoors or outdoors.

Tiny rounded leaves that keep their deep green color through the coldest months make boxwood an all-time favorite for landscapes. Most types can be sheared into a hedge, ball form, or left to grow in a more naturalized shape. Look for newer, disease-resistant varieties that don't need coddling.

To care for a Portulacaria afra (Jade plant or Elephant Bush), ensure bright, indirect sunlight, allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, and use well-draining soil, while also providing minimal fertilizer.

Pothos is one of the easiest houseplants to care for and an excellent choice for beginning growers. It's a tropical vine native to the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific easily trained to climb a support or trail from a pot or hanging basket. Adaptability and minimum maintenance make it a great plant for any houseplant collection.

Pothos are fast-growing plants often adding 12 to 18 inches of length in a month. Draping vines feature pointed, heart-shaped green leaves that may be variegated with white, yellow, or pale green striations. Be aware that pothos plants are toxic to pets.

Pothos Care

Pothos plants live an average five to 10 years, but with minimal consistent care can live much longer.

• Plant pothos in standard houseplant potting mix or well-draining aroid mix.
• Provide plenty of indirect light, ideally in an east- or west-facing window.
• Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings.
• Feed with balanced houseplant fertilizer monthly during spring and summer.

Light

Pothos likes sun or shade and can grow in low-light areas or those with only fluorescent lighting. Grown indoors, it prefers bright but indirect light. Too much shade causes variegated plants to lose their leaf pattern and revert to all-green foliage. Moving them to brighter conditions usually restores the variegation. Suddenly pale-looking leaves mean the plant is receiving too much direct sun.

Soil

Pothos plants thrive in ordinary, well-draining potting soil on the dry side and do just as well in coarse, chunky planting media. Neutral to slightly acidic soil is tolerated with a preferred soil pH from 6.1 to 6.8.

Water

Pothos should be watered when the top 2-inch layer of soil is dry. In ideal lighting conditions, you'll water a pothos every week or two. In winter you'll likely water less often.

The best thing about a pothos is that it will droop when it needs water. Don't wait for the leaves to shrivel or turn dry before watering. You want the leaves to be just a little bit droopy when you water.

Like any plant, when left in soggy soil for a prolonged period of time a pothos will develop root rot.3

Temperature and Humidity

Keep pothos at temperatures consistently above 50°F. and preferably between 65°F and 75°F. They grow best in high humidity, but adapt to low-humidity conditions. You can increase humidity around the plant by keeping it in a typically humid area of the home, such as a bathroom, or by grouping it with other tropical houseplants to create a humid microclimate.

Fertilizer

Pothos plants are not heavy feeders, but benefit from occasional fertilizing during the growing season. Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer once per month during spring and summer. Avoid fertilizing in winter when the plant goes dormant.

Pruning

Because pothos grow quickly, they can develop a sparse or leggy appearance. Pruning isn't necessary for the health of the plant, but occasional trimming can improve its shape. Use a sharp sterile cutting tool to make your cuts.

Pruning can make your pothos look bushier. To prune it, cut below a node close to the crown, always leaving at least two leaf nodes on the vine you are pruning. If your plant is leggy, cut back the growing tip to a desired length anywhere along the length of the vine.

You can prune pothos any time during the growing season, but you should avoid pruning when the plant is dormant.

Plants tend to develop a few yellow leaves every now and then, which can be removed by pinching it off at the base.

Propagating Pothos

You can buy a mature pothos from a plant shop, but it's easy to propagate using stem cuttings rooted in water. Gather together a sharp hand pruner and clear glass or vase. Once roots form you'll need a pot and houseplant mix. Follow these steps:

1. Use a sterile, sharp pruner to remove a healthy stem with at least three leaves. Cut at an angle about a half-inch or inch below the lowest leaf.
2. Remove the lowest leaf from the stem (you don't need to remove the other leaves).
3. Place the stem in a vase or jar of water, but do not let the remaining leaves touch the water.
4. New roots emerge in a week to ten days. Once roots are several inches long transplant cuttings into pots as soon as possible.
5. Place pots in a spot with bright indirect light and keep soil moist but not wet.

Fountain grass is a perennial bunchgrass that's native to Africa and western Asia. It's often used as an ornamental plant in warm climates. However, it's also an invasive species in the United States, and is considered a noxious weed in Hawaii.

orchid plant is a variety of orchid known for its pure white blooms, symbolizing purity, elegance, and innocence; often considered a beautiful and easy-care houseplant with graceful, arching stems and lush green leaves, typically requiring bright, indirect light and moderate watering, making it a popular choice for adding a touch of sophistication to any space; the most common white orchid variety is the Phalaenopsis orchid, native to Southeast Asia, and considered pet-friendly. 

To care for a Queen of the Night cactus (Epiphyllum oxypetalum), provide bright, indirect light, water sparingly when the top inch of soil is dry, use a well-draining potting mix, and only fertilize lightly during the growing season; avoid overwatering and ensure good drainage as this plant thrives in dry conditions; place it near an east or north facing window indoors and consider moving it outdoors to a partially shaded area during warmer months.

A rabbit foot fern (Davallia fejeensis) is a tropical fern native to Fiji, known for its distinctive furry, hairy rhizomes that resemble rabbit feet, which grow over the pot's edge, giving it its name; it has lacy fronds and thrives in high humidity, best grown as a hanging plant in bright, indirect light, requiring consistent moisture but not soggy soil; considered non-toxic to pets and humans.

Red Fuji blooms mid-late season and needs proper pollination with other apple varieties. It tends to bear biennially so, thin fruit early and aggressively on the "on" years when a large crop is expected, otherwise a large number of small apples will result, and next years crop may be non-existent.

To care for a Rex Begonia, provide bright, indirect light, keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, use a well-draining potting mix, maintain a warm temperature between 60°F and 75°F, and ensure moderate to high humidity levels; avoid direct sunlight and overwatering, and regularly remove dead leaves to encourage new growth.

To care for rhododendrons, ensure they are planted in a partially shaded area with well-draining, acidic soil, provide consistent moisture especially during dry spells, fertilize with an acidic plant food in early spring, prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape, and mulch around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature; avoid overwatering and excessive fertilization as they can harm the delicate root system.

Against this plant's deep green shiny leaves, showy flowers in brilliant purples, pale pinks, and snowy whites pop. They prefer dappled shade and are nice as a hedge or accent plant.
